The Rich History of Dalmia Bhavan

Originally built between 1835 - 1845 by the Goswami’s of Serampore, Dalmia Bhavan sits on a 80,000 sq ft of land. The Goswami’s amassed their wealth during the time of the Danish East India Company and were later given the title of ‘Raja’ by the British Raj.

Nestled amidst the bustle of Varanasi, it’s architecture is a harmonious blend of Indo-Saracenic and Neoclassical elements. Through its colossal single stone columns, extracted from the renowned quarries of Chunar, Sabo transports us back to a time when architectural brilliance flourished in India

During the late 19th century and well into the 20th century, Dalmia Bhavan served as a haven for notable figures whose contributions have shaped the course of Indian history. Its hallowed halls have welcomed the likes of Annie Besant, Mahatma Gandhi in his pre-Mahatma days, Sarojini Naidu, and the venerable Rabindranath Tagore. Such a lineage of esteemed guests only serves to emphasise the profound significance of this architectural gem.

The Dalmia Family

In the late 1960s, the Dalmia family made a momentous decision that would forever intertwine their legacy with the cultural fabric of Varanasi. Late Laxminiwas Dalmia acquired the enchanting garden house owned by the esteemed Raja Goswami. The house was intended to serve as a cherished abode for his beloved mother, Narmada Dalmia

Now, in the present day, the torchbearer of this esteemed lineage, Mr. Kunal Dalmia, proudly stands as the custodian of this historical gem. Having spent his formative years at the renowned Dalmia Bhavan, he has lovingly bestowed upon it a new name - SABO. This name, a tribute to his mother, Savitri Devi Dalmia, resonates with the depth of familial affection and reverence.

The Dalmia family's roots in Varanasi run deep, their commitment to the city's arts, culture, and education unparalleled. The Late LN Dalmia, in a remarkable display of philanthropy, gifted an astounding 425-pupil hostel to Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in memory of his father, Duli Chandji Dalmia. This magnificent establishment stands as a testament to the family's unwavering devotion to nurturing the minds of future generations.

But their benevolent efforts did not stop there. A science block exclusively for women, aimed at fostering scientific education and empowerment, was also donated to BHU. In a heartfelt gesture, this block was fittingly christened the “Savitri Devi Dalmia Vigyan Bhavan”, a name that echoes the spirit of a woman who epitomised strength and resilience.

Now, Mr. Kunal Dalmia embarks on an audacious endeavour that promises to add yet another jewel to his family's business empire, KAHM Industries. With an unwavering vision, he seeks to transform Dalmia Bhavan into a luxurious boutique hotel, a pioneering venture in the heart of Varanasi. This venture, the first of its kind in the city, will breathe new life into the historic walls that have witnessed the passage of time and the evolution of a remarkable dynasty.
